The Confederación Hidrográfica del Ebro has inaugurated today at the Ataria Interpretation Center, in Vitoria-Gasteiz, next to the Salburua wetlands, the traveling exhibition of its centenary, “Through the Ebro Basin”.

The event featured speeches, in this order, by Borja Rodríguez Ramajo, fourth deputy mayor of Vitoria-Gasteiz, and Javier San Román Saldaña, Centenary commissioner and deputy commissioner of Waters of the CHE. The presentation was delivered by Aitor Zulueta Tellería, director of the Center for Environmental Studies (CEA), as institutional host of Ataria.

The day began with media attention and continued with the institutional inauguration ceremony, followed by a tour of the exhibition.

The exhibition “Through the Ebro Basin” has been open to the public in Vitoria-Gasteiz from today, June 12, 2026, and may be visited until July 12, 2026 at the Ataria Interpretation Center.

Vitoria-Gasteiz thus takes over from the previous exhibition venues, which has already visited Reinosa, Miranda de Ebro and Logroño. After its stay in Vitoria-Gasteiz, the exhibition will continue its tour through Pamplona, Lleida, Huesca and Tortosa, along with the main exhibition scheduled in Zaragoza, at the Sástago Palace.

The exhibition route reviews one hundred years of water management in the Ebro basin and combines historical documentation, hydraulic heritage and outreach content on the territory’s current challenges.

At the Vitoria-Gasteiz venue, the exhibition incorporates a reading linked to the Green Ring and the Salburua wetlands, one of the most valuable natural areas in the northern peninsula. The Ataria Interpretation Center offers in this context a framework especially connected to environmental education, biodiversity and the relationship between city, water and territory.

The traveling exhibition invites visitors to explore the history of Ebro management and to understand how cooperation between administrations and citizens has contributed to protecting water-related ecosystems and promoting a balance between urban development and natural conservation.

The program linked to the Vitoria-Gasteiz venue will be complemented next week with the Centenary Encounters, which will be held on June 18, 2026, at 5:30 PM, also at Ataria, with presentations by José María Sanz de Galdeano Equiza, “The Zadorra system: evolution, risk management and institutional collaboration”, and Ángel Llamazares Álvarez, “Public management of urban water in Álava: essential collaboration between institutions. Perspective from AMVISA (Vitoria-Gasteiz)”.

About the CHE

The Confederación Hidrográfica del Ebro (CHE) is an inter-regional basin authority, attached to the Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y el Reto Demográfico. Among its functions are the construction and maintenance of infrastructure, the maintenance and management of the organization’s assets, hydrological planning, the administration of the public hydraulic domain and coordination with sectors linked to its various uses and with administrations, with the objective of ensuring sustainable management in the Ebro basin, the largest in Spain. Desde su creación ha trabajado para equilibrar la gestión técnica con la protección ambiental y el interés público con el diálogo territorial.

About the Centenary

The Confederación Hidrográfica del Ebro (CHE) was born under the name Confederación Sindical Hidrográfica del Ebro, created on March 5, 1926 and made official the following day in the Gaceta de Madrid. That project, in which the engineer Manuel Lorenzo Pardo played a decisive role, introduced in Spain the idea of managing water under the principle of basin unity, overcoming administrative boundaries and committing to comprehensive planning.

A century later, its centenary offers the opportunity to revisit that origin and bring citizens closer to the evolution of water management in the Ebro. The commemorative program invites people to learn about this legacy and to participate in it.
