The Library of the Instituto de Estudios Altoaragoneses (IEA), an agency of the Diputación Provincial de Huesca, has joined the centenary of the Confederación Hidrográfica del Ebro (CHE) by dedicating its “Topic of the Month” (May 2026) to this institution. The initiative brings together a selection of books from the IEA’s bibliographic collection focused on the CHE, available for consultation and loan.

Attached to the Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y el Reto Demográfico, the CHE is the body responsible for hydrological planning, the management of waters and their channels, and the operation and maintenance of hydraulic works within the Ebro district.

Based in Zaragoza, the news report highlights how the CHE was the first institution created in the world with the objective of managing a river basin in a unified manner. In March, it celebrated its centenary: it was established on March 5, 1926, to comprehensively manage the Ebro basin according to the principle of basin unity, an approach that allowed water management to be organized beyond administrative boundaries in an area that integrates territories from nine autonomous communities and eighteen provinces.

The agenda entry notes that the first director of the organization was Manuel Lorenzo Pardo, considered its great driving force, who took up the mantle of Joaquín Costa’s hydrological thought. Since its creation, the CHE has generated and compiled a documentary heritage linked to water, organized into an archive, digital library, video library, and photographic collection.

The IEA Library exhibits and makes available to the public the books it holds regarding the CHE, which can be consulted or requested for loan at its facilities at calle del Parque, 10 (Huesca), from Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and on Wednesdays also from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
