In its centenary year, the Confederación Hidrográfica del Ebro also looks toward its archive: hundreds of concession and heritage files, some dating back to before 1926, are being transformed into digital memory at the service of conservation, consultation, and public water management.
The historical archive as water memory. Water management is also built on memory. Behind every concession, every file, and every administrative document, there is a part of the history of the Ebro basin: how its resources have been used, how the needs of the territory have changed, and how the relationship between water, people, and institutions has been organized.
Digitizing for preservation and consultation. The Confederación Hidrográfica del Ebro has promoted a digitization process for concession and heritage files covering documentation between 1870 and 1974. The initiative allows for the preservation of a unique documentary heritage, reduces the handling of originals, and makes it easier for this information to be consulted and used more efficiently.
Two videos to explore the process. Coinciding with the centenary of the Confederación Hidrográfica del Ebro, two audiovisual pieces published on the organization’s official channel show this work from the inside: the physical archive, the preserved files, the digital capture, and the technology that allows historical documents to be converted into accessible information.
The two videos invite viewers to explore a task that is not very visible but essential: protecting the administrative memory of water so that it remains useful in the present and helps plan for the future.
