The event was attended by the president of the CHE, Carlos Arrazola Martínez; the commissioner of the Centenary, Javier San Román Saldaña; the mayor of Reinosa, José Luis López Vielba; the Councilor for Culture, José María Martínez, and María Tejerina Puente, general director of Water and Ports of the Government of Cantabria.
The day began with attention to the media at 6:30 PM and continued at 7:00 PM with institutional interventions: the welcome from the mayor of Reinosa, the intervention of María Tejerina Puente, and the official inauguration by the president of the CHE. After these interventions, a guided tour of the exhibition took place.
During the inauguration, Carlos Arrazola stressed that this centenary is an invitation to understand how water management has built territory and united generations, and pointed out that opening the tour in Reinosa has had an indisputable symbolic and technical value. In the same vein, Javier San Román highlighted that the exhibition has shown how the history of water is also the history of the people who have lived along the Ebro, and considered that Reinosa has been the best place to start this journey.
The exhibition Along the Ebro Basin has been open to the public in Reinosa from today, December 17, 2025, and will remain accessible until February 1, 2026. The exhibition tour reviewed one hundred years of hydrological management in the Ebro basin, combining historical documentation, hydraulic heritage, and informative content on the current challenges of the territory.
In addition to a space dedicated to the local dimension of Reinosa, the exhibition has incorporated unpublished audiovisual material from the CHE, from its documentary collections, with films from the 1920s that show the first steps of the institution in the city. Reinosa has opened the itinerary due to its direct link with the birth of the Ebro River, a few kilometers away, in the Fontibre springs.

The Confederación Hidrográfica del Ebro is an inter-community basin organization attached to the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge. Its functions include the construction and maintenance of infrastructure (dams and canals), maintenance and management of the agency’s assets, hydrological planning, administration of public water resources, and coordination with sectors linked to their various uses and with administrations, with the aim of ensuring sustainable management in the Ebro basin, the largest in Spain. About the Centenary
The Confederación Hidrográfica del Ebro of 2026 was born under the name of the Confederación Sindical Hidrográfica del Ebro, created on March 5, 1926, and made official the following day in the Madrid Gazette. That project, in which engineer Manuel Lorenzo Pardo played a decisive role, introduced the idea of managing water in Spain under the principle of basin unity, overcoming administrative boundaries and committing to comprehensive planning. A century later, its centenary offers an opportunity to revisit those origins and bring the evolution of water management in the Ebro closer to the public.
