The Confederación Hidrográfica del Ebro will hold on March 26, at 6:00 PM, at the Casa de Cultura in Miranda de Ebro, the second session of the Centenary Encounters, a series conceived as a space for dialogue about the territory, water, and the history of hydrological management in the Ebro basin.
The Centenary Encounters session in Miranda de Ebro, titled “Conversations about the Ebro Basin: Living with the River and Harnessing Its Energy”, will feature the participation of José Adolfo Álvarez González and Clemente Prieto Hernández, and is part of the commemorative program for the centenary of the Confederación Hidrográfica del Ebro.
The session will address issues related to the history and management of the basin: the memory of floods and the role of hydroelectric energy in transforming the environment. The format, open and informative in nature, seeks to bring different perspectives on water management and uses closer to the public.
José Adolfo Álvarez González, industrial technical engineer and former head of the Automatic Hydrological Information System (SAIH) Service of the CHE, will present the paper “Floods in Miranda de Ebro. Understanding Them to Live with Them”. In it, he will explain the need to understand the river’s behavior and live with the risk through knowledge and prevention.
For his part, Clemente Prieto Hernández, civil engineer with extensive experience in hydroelectric operation and flood management, will give the talk “Hydroelectric Energy and the Ebro Basin”, in which he will address the relationship between water energy use and its evolution in the basin.
The Centenary Encounters are part of the CHE’s commemorative activities program and are held alongside the traveling exhibition Through the Ebro Basin, with the aim of bringing the history, challenges, and perspectives of water management in different parts of the basin closer to the public.
The encounter will be held on March 26, 2026, at 6:00 PM, in Multipurpose Room 2 of the Casa de Cultura in Miranda de Ebro. Admission will be free until capacity is reached. All information can be found on the CHE’s centenary website.
About the CHE
The Confederación Hidrográfica del Ebro (CHE) is an inter-regional basin authority, attached to the Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y el Reto Demográfico. Its functions include the construction and maintenance of infrastructure (dams and canals), the maintenance and management of the organization’s assets, hydrological planning, the administration of the public hydraulic domain, and coordination with sectors linked to its various uses and with administrations, with the objective of ensuring sustainable management in the Ebro basin, the largest in Spain. Desde su creación ha trabajado para equilibrar la gestión técnica con la protección ambiental y el interés público con el diálogo territorial.
About the Centenary
The Confederación Hidrográfica del Ebro (CHE) was established under the name Confederación Sindical Hidrográfica del Ebro, created on March 5, 1926, and made official the following day in the Gaceta de Madrid. That project, in which engineer Manuel Lorenzo Pardo played a decisive role, introduced to Spain the idea of managing water under the principle of basin unity, transcending administrative boundaries and advocating for comprehensive planning. A century later, its centenary offers the opportunity to revisit that origin and bring the evolution of water management in the Ebro closer to the public. The commemorative program invites people to learn about this legacy and participate in it.
