1926 – 2026

HIC 2026 connects international hydroinformatics in Zaragoza with the future of water management in the Ebro basin

The 16th International Conference on Hydroinformatics will be held from June 22 to 26 in Zaragoza, with the CHE among the Platinum category sponsors and a paper dedicated to the SAIH Ebro.

In the centenary year, the congress places artificial intelligence, hydrological forecasting, digital twins, and climate resilience at the center of basin management challenges.

From June 22 to 26, 2026, Zaragoza will host HIC 2026, the 16th International Conference on Hydroinformatics, an international meeting focused on the digital transformation of water management. The event brings together specialists in artificial intelligence, modeling, data, hydrological forecasting, and technologies applied to water systems at a particularly significant time for the Confederación Hidrográfica del Ebro, which is celebrating one hundred years of basin management.

The presence of the CHE among the Platinum sponsors links the congress with the narrative of the CHE Centenary: the institution founded in 1926 to organize water management from the perspective of basin unity is now looking toward tools capable of anticipating scenarios, supporting decisions, and improving the response to droughts, floods, and environmental challenges.

The link with the Ebro basin appears directly in the HIC 2026 book of abstracts, which includes a paper on the SAIH Ebro and flood risk management. The work describes a monitoring and forecasting system that integrates hydrometeorological sensors, models, weather forecasts, and artificial intelligence tools to support decision-making with horizons of up to 72 hours.

In addition to the paper dedicated to the SAIH Ebro, the official HIC 2026 program includes two technical visits directly linked to the Confederación Hidrográfica del Ebro: one to the Ebro Automatic Hydrological Information System and another to the locks and the Casablanca Mill, within the hydraulic complex of the Canal Imperial de Aragón.

HIC 2026 technical visits, Friday, June 26

Meeting point: Paraninfo building of the Universidad de Zaragoza, outdoor stairs. See location.

Meeting time: 9:00 AM.

9:30–10:30 AM

Group 1: visit to the Decision Support System – SAIH Ebro, located at the headquarters of the Confederación Hidrográfica del Ebro, on Paseo de Sagasta in Zaragoza.
Group 2: visit to the locks and the Casablanca Mill, where the history, operation, and current management of the Canal Imperial de Aragón will be explained.

11:30 AM–12:30 PM

Group 1: visit to the locks and the Casablanca Mill.
Group 2: visit to the Decision Support System – SAIH Ebro.

These visits will provide an insight into basin water management from two complementary perspectives: on the one hand, today’s monitoring, forecasting, and decision-support tools; on the other, one of the great works of Spanish hydraulic engineering and its role in the history of irrigation and water supply in Aragón.

In the centenary year, HIC 2026 helps connect the history of the CHE with its next horizon: continuing to manage the Ebro basin with technical knowledge, institutional cooperation, and new digital capabilities at the service of the territory.
