Vitoria-Gasteiz, recognized as the European Green Capital in 2012, is an example of the integration of nature, city, and sustainability. Located at the gateway to the Green Belt, the Ataria Interpretation Center offers a unique view of the Salburua wetlands, one of the most valuable wetlands in the northern peninsula. This environment of high ecological value connects the city with the river landscapes of the Ebro basin, creating a space where water, biodiversity, and environmental awareness are interrelated.
Ataria is more than just an outreach center. It is a meeting point for environmental education, citizen participation, and scientific research on water management and wetland conservation. The Confederación Hidrográfica del Ebro (CHE) maintains close collaboration with Vitoria-Gasteiz and the Salburua area, promoting river restoration projects and raising awareness about the sustainable use of water resources.
The CHE centenary traveling exhibition at Ataria invites visitors to journey through the history of Ebro management, exploring how cooperation between administrations and citizens has enabled the protection of water-related ecosystems and guaranteed a balance between urban development and natural conservation. In this context, Vitoria-Gasteiz presents itself as a model city that has integrated the river and wetlands into its identity, demonstrating that sustainability is the path to the future.
